Review of the show written in August 2008

i woke up and my camera was dead. it had done a bad job from 2004-2007, been unsharp as fuck in dark rooms like concert venues, but it had functioned. until the day fla played their first berlin show in 12 years. one cam down. then i went to the venue, said hi to the band, and then to the camera rental store. of course it is closed on saturdays, and arriving there finally made me aware of that. 2 cameras down. returned to the venue, already knowing that today wouldnt become a major success.
had been lookin foward to this day a lot. my fav band finally plays my hometown. i also hoped to get some extra stuff done next to filming the show, film another interview maybe, take the band to a fairground and do some autoscooter for a music video for BANG! maniacal, and talk about the fla tour dvd as we had it at that point. hey at least discussing some videos with jeremy on screen for 10 minutes worked out.
sometime i walked into bill that afternoon. 'hey henrik, youve come to get on our nerves today or what?'. turned out to be 1 of 3 sentences we talked to each other that entire day. meeting adrian was more pleasant, after having had a few heated conversations and disappointments in the months before, i just approached him saying 'hey a, so how bout it, is there anything wrong between us today?' and basically he can be a very nice person and made plenty of use of it that day at least. filmed some of the soundcheck, sat around, waited for the show...
a while after the tour i read that the band had had some 'whoever says the name henrik must put 5$ into a hat' during the tour, i mean you know henriks standing among the fans and so how surprised are you to see the band being like that too?
so then, portion control started their set. after 10 minutes the beamer crashed, and the rest of the night was visuals-free, however the beginning of the fla set was delayed like 30min cause they unsuccessfully tried to organize a new fuse for the beamer. i filmed most of the pc gig from behind the stage, didnt turn out massively good cause it was only 2 cams and i didnt wanna be seen from the audience which meant keeping low.
fla set seemed okay until buried alive crashed in. even though the audio recording of the gig sounds really good, the on-stage sound seemed to be somewhat the opposite of it. 'can we get some fucking sound or what' was bills first on-stage comment to it. first song a total mess with jeremy running over to the stage soundman, bill major pissed. 'sorry for the delay tonight, we have no visuals, the sound sucks, everything sucks'. an announcement right at the intro to liquid separation, which i opted with taking out entirely for the dvd. took me a long time to just say okay lets have an announcement like this on there. internal combustion was also ruined, my camera (the one i used from my dad that day for the first time ever) has a lens cover that can be opened or taken off, of course i just opened it, and so during one of the 2 songs that were new on this tour and were most important to film, i managed to have that lens cover reach into the picture for longer than one minute before i noticed it. meanwhile the sound problems seemed to become less relevant but bills mood took an unfortunate spotlight. he definitely had one of his worst days and communicated it to the audience. after combustion adrian introduced the band members, and the silence after 'and this is bill leeb' said a lot about it. top of it was glen reely (fla's soundman) turning bills mic down between the songs. starting a take too early in plasticity was a representative ending of the main set. the audience break took longer than usual for obvious reasons, meanwhile my cameras battery had gone low and i plugged electricity in somewhere in jeremys rig. somewhere in gun he saw that i was stretching the cable, ran to me in the belt, screamed something at me angrily that i didnt have a clue on, and 30 seconds later he went upfront again, grabbed my cam and ripped out the cable. i remember screaming 'fuck off, what do i have to do with everything goin wrong today, sure', jumped over the fence into the audience, and 'enjoyed' the rest of the set in there. remember thinkin what a fucking boring song mindphaser is. did i mention that for some reason they skipped maniacal from the set and had it as optional second encore? maybe the fans wouldve deserved to hear it though, one of the still running cameras caught a fan or two who gave 2 middle fingers towards the stage after everything was over. my own figure for it was wgt2.
this was in timing terms the middle of my fla tour dvd adventure, and its not entirely unrepresentative of the whole thing. but then my complaints sent to the band in an email days later just vanished in the dresden 1945 episode which was arising. i had a relatively good time at the aftershow party right across the door with the band and my friends hangin out for a few hours, but the fact that the party was organized by torsten, who asked me to put him on the concert guestlist while not putting me on the party guest list in return gives a good outlook on what was next in this extreme amount of joy that this fla dvd train wreck embodies.
